The road tunnel is a joke. Hardly anyone travels that way across town. CBD exist congestion is the real problem with the Eastern. A rail line to Doncaster would alleviate traffic congestion coming into the city from the eastern suburbs. It makes so much sense that it has been on the drawing board for decades. What doesn't make sense is that the government has procrastinated so long that it wants to build yet another expensive road before it will happen if ever.

    As a resident of Brunswick I am pleased that Mr Carli is critical of the proposed tunnel. It is to be hoped that public debate will reveal an east-west road tunnel for the folly which it is. It is simple. Building more roads does not ease traffic congestion - it only creates it.
The idea for a tunnel is flawed for four reasons:
1. It is unnecessary - there is no demand but if built, will create demand;
2. It is extremely expensive;
3. The money is better spent elsewhere;
4. It is environmentally irresponsible;
Simply, it is a flawed and short sighted policy.
The government should concentrate on improved rail infrastructure - a link to Doncaster, for instance is sorely needed. A great deal could be built with the $10 billion estimated for the east west tunnel.
We can only hope that reason prevails in this debate. The stance of Mr Carli on the issue is a good start.

    Thanks for your substantative contribution Lisa. I fail to see how Labor has failed to stop fighting the Howard Government since Labor is actually devoting serious resources fighting the Liberals in the marginal seats, whereas the Green Political party spends all their resources and time atatcking Labor seats and the Labor party.

i suggest strongly that you consider applying the rule, "judge one by what they do, not what they say."

    Why is it that you seem to believe that you are born to rule. I thought that was a Liberal party disease. The Fact is that the Greens seem to be the only ones keeping you honest Lindsay.

Just why have you given in on fighting the Howard IR laws, Uranium mining, logging of old growth forests.
Settle down Chris - we all know the Bill was a stunt by Bracks to embarrass Howard - the Bill did nothing substantial. Greg Barber demanded that Bracks include in the legislation a committment to keep Victoria nuclear free and Bracks declined - now to see real sell outs lets await the ALP National Conference this weekend.

    John,

You had every opportunity to discuss the petition with all sorts of people that day. The President and Secretary of the Brunswick branch were present. Carlo Carli was present. Councillors were present. I was present and even said hello, yet you chose to ignore me.

However, what you chose to do was go and run to the press.

I think that says everything that needs to be said.

You know as well as I do that the State Government did not grant funding last year because Council had not done enough work. Councillors were in the press over summer alluding to a potential crisis. In the Leader last month mention was made of some councillors wanting to delay decisions on the Brunswick Baths until after the next Council elections - ie. 2009!

How can you be surprised that there is community angst on this issue?

The State Government - I suspect - is waiting for Councillors to commit to the latest plan, which I note as of yesterday was NOT on the Council website.

We can save the Brunswick Baths and renew it for the next generation, but I with all respect suggest that you stop throwing grenades from your bunker and reach out to members of the concerned community.

But then its so much easier to go running to the media and making wild accusations isn't it?

Please Councillor, you have the phone number of the people involved - I suggest you use it.

    On Sunday March 4th, I, attended the Sydney Road Street Party. I was stunned to be asked to sign a petition, organised by the Brunswick branch of the ALP to ‘Save the Brunswick Pool.’ Obviously a petition such as this presupposes that if a pool requires saving then it must be in some present danger. The fact is that nothing could be further from the truth.

This Council has always viewed the Brunswick City Baths as an important community asset. It is true that major works are required to bring this pool to the modern standards that are desired by its’ users. The present Council has been proactive in working towards these improvements.

In this financial year’s budget Council has allocated $100,000 for the Aquatic Implementation Plan - this incorporated the provision of funds to commence design work for the redevelopment of the Brunswick City Baths.

On September 13th last year I moved that Council submit to SRV's Better Pools Funding Program for a maximum $2.5 million in funding based on a 1:3 ratio. We were advised on November 1st that we had been unsuccessful.

Since that time, Council staff have progressed the design development and broadened the scope of the project and at the Council meeting on the 14th February I moved a successful motion that included: ”to proceed with redevelopment of the Brunswick City Baths by considering concept plans at the Council meeting on 14 March 2007 prior to community consultation".

When the improvements to our aquatic facilities are complete it will be due to the work of the Moreland City Council, both staff and Councillors, and will have nothing to do with the politically motivated, unnecessary and completely alarmist efforts of the Brunswick branch of the A.L.P.

If the Brunswick branch of the ALP saw fit to encourage Carlo Carli MP to advocate for some state government funding towards these projects or if they bothered to ask any Councillor, including those from their own branch, for an update on the current initiatives taken by Council or if they submitted their views of the Aquatic Strategy, which is currently out for community consultation, it would be a far more productive use of their time and resources, rather than conducting mischievous, ill-informed petitions for their own political gain.
