Part of $2 Million Brumby Government Funding to Improve Sustainable Transport
Jane Garrett, Labor candidate for Brunswick, has welcomed news of an $160,000 Brumby Labor Government initiative to fund a new alternative north south bike route through Brunswick and Brunswick East linking Carlton North and Coburg.
Moreland City Council has received $160,000 as part of nearly $2 million given to councils in Melbourne and regional Victoria to improve local access and overcome barriers to walking, cycling and public transport.
The $226,000 Canning Street Extension Project will be delivered thanks to joint funding from the Brumby Government’s fourth round of TravelSmart and Local Area Access Program grants and Moreland City Council.
“I am delighted to announce funding for this project, which will improve sustainable transport options in our community and encourage people to leave their cars at home for short trips,” Ms Garrett said.

Heat–related illness can range from mild conditions such as a rash or cramps to very serious conditions such as heat stroke, which can kill. Heat may worsen the condition of someone who already has a medical condition such as heart disease. Prevention is the best way to manage heat-related illness.

In today's Age, Rob Moodie writes about the move towards a smart health system...
A good starting point would be to ensure we have a health system — one that actively creates good health from birth and maximises our health to the grave — not simply an illness system. Such a system needs to be smart, balanced, fair and simple.
Federal Labor's new health policy moves in this direction. In Fresh Ideas, Future Economy Labor notes that... The current health system is very good at providing acute and episodic care when people are sick, but it is not well equipped to meet the future challenge of the growing chronic disease burden. Labor proposes to initiate major health care reform by shifting the focus to preventative healthcare. Only by making this shift can we treat people fairly and manage the chronic disease burden
