Melbourne’s public transport network has shown its support for World Environment Day today with the launch of Yarra Trams’ latest ‘greendepot’ at Brunswick.
Greendepots have already implemented at three other depots including East Preston, Malvern and Glenhuntly.
Incorporating water and energy saving systems, greendepots reduce environmental impacts and encourage sustainable practices
Member for Brunswick, Carlo Carli MP, sai
d the existing depots save a combined 4.09 million litres of water each year, with the Brunswick Depot expected to harvest an additional 2.5 million litres of water annually.
“

The program is a positive example of environmental innovation within the transport industry and I’m delighted that the greendepot program is growing,” Mr Carli said
“Our water and energy supplies are precious and we are requiring new and innovative solutions that promote greener and environmentally smart transport initiatives.”
Specifically, the Brunswick Depot will include –
- Installation of six rainwater tanks - stored rainwater for washing trams
- Waterless urinals and water saving toilet cisterns
- Installation of flow restrictors on all taps and showerheads – reducing the flow rate from approximately 32 litres per minute to four litres per minute
- Fully segregated waste disposal focuses on recycling and waste minimisation
- Tram sand collected and recycled
- Raingarden using recycled tram sand to filter contaminants from the car park
- A worm farm to reduce food waste
- Rezoning lights in the running shed and reconfiguring light switches across the depot to reduce energy consumption
- Yarra staff environmental awareness program
The opening of the Brunswick greendepot on World Environment Day demonstrates the Government’s support in providing greener and environmentally smart transport initiatives.
“This is a great sustainable public transport initiative contributing to a cleaner, greener Victoria,” Mr Carli said
“It’s great to see private businesses working in partnership with Government to establish water and energy saving initiatives in Melbourne and I’m proud to see the transport industry leading the way.”
