- $5 million in State Budget for a Bike Hire scheme for inner Melbourne
- 50 bicycle stations with up to 600 bikes
- To be operational in 2010
Tenders will be called this month to establish a public bike hire scheme in Melbourne with the 2009 State Budget to commit $5 million, the Brumby Government announced today.
The new system would help create a greener transport network for the city.
The Brumby Government is taking action now to build a world-class
transport network as we deliver our $38 billion Victorian Transport
Plan and that includes providing greener and more accessible travel
options for all Victorians.
The Government is committed to promoting cycling as a viable, sustainable,
affordable and safe transport option. This scheme will effectively
create a new transport option, allowing Melburnians to make short trips
around town using a network of public bicycles.
The new bike hire system will be a great boost for
Melbourne residents while promoting a new reliable and sustainable
transport option.
Around 50 bicycle stations will be set up at key locations around
inner Melbourne including Parliament House, Federation Square, Southern
Cross Station, Melbourne University and the Carlton hospital precinct.
These stations will house up to 600 bikes between them offering
residents, workers and students a cheap and greener way to travel in
and around the CBD.
The system aims to encourage more people to ride a bike for short
trips helping to relieve pressure on transport systems in the
inner-city, ease traffic congestion and also offers health and
wellbeing benefits.
A call for tenders would be released on 6 May, 2009, with the system expected to be operating in 2010.
