Thursday, February 21. 2008BRUNSWICK GETS NEW YEAR ROAD SAFETY BOOSTMr Carli said the $95.000 project involved roads safety improvements around Brunswick. “This location has been identified as a road safety risk and this upgrade will go a long way to reducing that risk,” he said. “Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas, recently announced that $32 million will be spent on country and outer metro roads in the next financial year as part of the Safer Road Infrastructure Program. “The Safer Road Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and since 2004 has allocated over $360 million to improving safety. “The program specifically targets dangerous intersections as well as stretches of road that are known for run-off-road crashes.” The project I am announcing today will involve: installation of LED "Give Way To Pedestrians" lanterns with early start pedestrian phase, extra lantern facing southbound traffic on existing mast arm (pole) and relocation of tram stop signs. “Traffic lights are often installed at intersections as they have a dual function of improving safety and also controlling traffic movements through the intersection. “This particular intersection between Sydney road and Albion Street has had 13 crashes over the past five years. The improved lights will go a long way to addressing this.” Carlo Carli said that the Safer Road Infrastructure Program was vital to further improving road safety in Victoria. “Over the past five years, Victoria has recorded its five lowest road tolls since records began,” said Mr Carli. “The Brumby Government’s recently announced new arrive alive strategy aims to drive down the road toll by a further 30 per cent by 2017 and will include a $650 million investment into road safety projects over the next ten years. “Victoria leads the way in Australia in reducing road trauma and we want to continue to improve road safety for all Victorians.” For more information about the Victorian Government’s road safety strategy, visit www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au.
