Saturday, November 4. 2006Helping families combat climate changeA re-elected Labor Government will help families reduce greenhouse gas emissions from households by 10 per cent, and save householders $100 a year on their electricity bills.
We will also require energy retailers to help households achieve the new 10 per cent reduction target. A Labor Government would continue to fight any attempts to bring nuclear power to Victoria. A re-elected Bracks Government will:
• Require energy retailers to help customers reduce energy use by supplying energy efficient products such as light globes, Triple A shower heads and insulation; • Provide $14 million for rebates for replacing old fridges, heaters and other appliances; • Provide $2 million to retrofit public housing estates with energy efficiency improvements; • Ensure households and small business that feed solar and other renewable energy back into the power grid receive a fair price; and • Government will also do its part, increasing its energy saving target from 15 to 20 per cent and boosting its purchase of Green Power to one quarter of energy use. Since the Bracks Government came to office, Victoria had led Australia in tackling emissions, supporting wind farms, clean coal technology, energy efficiency and Green Power. We have proposed a national emissions trading scheme with the other States, and have legislated a VRET scheme requiring a minimum of 10 per cent of Victoria’s power generation to come from renewable energy by 2016.
