The State Government has given approval for AGL to build Australia's largest wind farm.
The wind farm, at Macarthur in western Victoria, will have up to 183 turbines with a total capacity of 329 megawatts. The turbines will be spread across 55 square kilometres of predominantly cleared farm land about 32 kilometres north of Port Fairy.
The $600 million project will generate enough electricity to power almost 190,000 homes a year, or three times the number of houses in Geelong.
This important project is yet more evidence that the Bracks Government is taking climate change seriously and supporting the renewable energy industry as part of a package of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Macarthur wind farm will also be a boon to the local economy, with 600 to 900 direct jobs created in construction and manufacturing over its two-year construction period. An estimated 52 per cent of the project’s total capital cost will be spent locally, and 77 per cent within Australia.
Climate change is one of the most important challenges we face and, unlike the Liberal Party - or for that matter the Greens, the Bracks Government is implementing policies and supporting projects that will result in real reductions in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
