Friday, June 23. 2006Vale Jack Mutton 1915-2006John Patrick, or Jack, Mutton died on Tuesday night at the Northern Hospital in Epping.
Jack was Member for Coburg from 1967 to 1979, succeeding his father Charlie Mutton as the Independent Labor MP. The rebellion of the Blackburn/Mutton faction of the ALP remains one of the most amazing chapters of Labor history in Victoria. In 1940 Frank Keane died in office, having served as a MP for Coburg since 1940. The Central Executive of the Labor Party decided to cancel a local pre-selection and installed its handpciked candidate Roy Cameron as the candidate.
The increasingly independent Coburg ALP branch resented the increasing control of the Central Executive and what they perceived as its right wing tendancies. At this time Labor politics in Coburg was split between the mainly catholic supporters of the Central Executive and the supporters of Federal MP Muarice Blackburn - who had already been expelled (then rejoined) from the ALP in 1936 and would be expelled again in 1941. Coburg ALP Members turned to Fawkner ALP stalwart, Broadmeadows Councillor and local farmer, Charlie Mutton to rebel against the party machine. Charlie won by 2000 votes and increased his majority in later elections. When Charlie retired, he passed the baton to his son Jack. Jack was a VBU member, panel beater and Broadmeadows Councillor. He held Coburg as an Independent until 1979, when a resurgent State ALP reclaimed Coburg and has held the seat (and its successors Brunswick & Pascoe Vale) ever since. Jack's funeral will be on Monday 26 June, 11.00am, St Marks Catholic Church, cnr Sydney Rd & Lee St, Fawkner. Trackbacks
